UPDATED: Sorrentino transferred to county jail with firearm charges

PERU — The man involved in the nearly 12-hour standoff in Peru Monday was transferred to the La Salle County Jail overnight.
56-year old Jeffery Sorrentino has a charge of aggravated discharge of a firearm with no bond set according to Tuesday’s jail booking sheet.
Around 11:25 PM Monday, police had taken 56-year old Jeff Sorrentino into custody, long after their initial attempt to serve an eviction notice at the home in the 2100-block of Fourth Street. Police were able to take Sorrentino into custody without incident.
This all follows the initial call at 11:40 AM, when police were called to the home for a report of shots fired. La Salle County Sheriff Tom Templeton and his department were already on scene serving the eviction notice, when they were allegedly shot at by Sorrentino. Police said at an earlier press conference that they did not fire back immediately. One of the shots were said to narrowly miss Templeton.
During the whole ordeal, Peru Police Chief Doug Bernabei said, “Time is on our side, we are not rushing in. We will wait it out. The goal here is to have it come to a peaceful conclusion.”
Bernabei says Peru Police has been doing background checks along with the La Salle County Sheriff’s Office on Sorrentino, saying that they had planned for such a situation as this. “We planned for the worst, hoped for the best. We got the worst,” Bernabei said.
A La Salle County Sheriff’s armored truck was seen doing laps near the house, going along Pike, Fourth, Schulyer, and Fifth Streets. A Peru Fire drone was also sent to fly over the house. During the early afternoon, police say contact with Sorrentino was very limited.
Area residents, businesses, and Peru Catholic School were all evacuated safely during the situation.
Around 6:30 this evening, an Illinois State Police SWAT armored truck moved up Fourth Street, near the house and began talking through a loudspeaker to Sorrentino. Police were also said to deliver a phone to the house via a bomb squad robot. Drones were seen flying over the home at one point, with one of them coming down near the roof of the home. It was said that the drone had dropped a phone to the home.
Around 5:00 PM, police gave a quick update, however with minimal details. They mentioned the plan of negotiating with Sorrentino, and that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was on-scene, along with approximately 20 different agencies, both fire and police.
Some on-scene agencies include Peru and La Salle Police, La Salle County Sheriff’s, Bureau County Sheriff’s, Kane County Bomb Squad, Illinois State Police, and the La Salle County State’s Attorney Office.
This story will be updated as new information is made available.
