DIXON –  A shooting Wednesday in the Dixon High School gymnasium has one person in custody after being shot by an officer.  According to Dixon Police Chief Steve Howell, the suspect fired several shots in a hallway near the gym and the resource officer assigned to the school charged the student. The suspect then fled and began running onto the street adjacent to the school. While in pursuit on foot, the suspect turned and fired on the officer who returned fire striking the gunman. He was taken into custody with non-life threatening injuries on the west side of the high school. The male with the weapon, described as a 19-year-old former student, was shot.  No other injuries were reported to students or staff according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, who during the event, had barricaded classroom doors with desks and chairs. The incident took place while students were gathered in the gym for graduation practice. The FBI and the ATF are assisting with the investigation, along with the Illinois State Police.
