PERU – Joan Fernandez will continue to be in charge of the Illinois Valley Community Hospital community outreach department—a role she has filled since 2009—while also assuming communications and marketing responsibilities. She has been a community outreach nurse since coming to IVCH in 1995. She also served for a time as the Peru hospital’s home IV therapy coordinator.
A Peru native, Fernandez received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Bradley University in Peoria. She worked in hospitals in Springfield and Kansas City before moving back to the Illinois Valley. She has been an oncology certified nurse since 1988.
Known for her involvement in community activities, Fernandez was a key figure in the recent reorganization of the Pink Ribbon Club to make it a state-recognized charitable organization. She currently serves as president of the club’s board of directors.
Fernandez is a past member of the LaSalle-Peru High School Foundation board of directors and a past member of the Zonta Club of LaSalle-Peru. She represented IVCH on a local coalition charged with making healthcare professionals aware of the signs of domestic violence.
Fernandez was one of the 2018 recipients of Illinois Valley Living magazine’s Women of Distinction Award. Fernandez and her husband, Dr. Mark Fernandez, are residents of Peru and the parents of two sons.
