STREATOR – A Streator resident fell victim to a phony check scam this past week according to the Streator Police Department. Wednesday a resident told police that they had received a check in the mail with a request to cash it and return to the sender gift cards. The victim did so, however, they were notified later by their bank that the check was fraudulent. The amount of the check was over $1800. The Federal Trade Commission advises that if anyone tells you to pay by gift card, or by wiring money – for any reason – that’s a sure sign of a scam.
