PERU – A ground-breaking ceremony was held at the Illinois Valley PADS Shelter in Peru Saturday morning. The ceremony celebrated plans to create family rooms and other upgrades. Executive Director Carol Alcorn says the dream to extend the shelter began five years ago.
Alcorn says after watching the increased need for family rooms for the homeless in the Illinois Valley in the past 28 years, she and the Board of Directors stated a campaign to raise funds in 2018 for the nearly 5880 square foot addition.
The project will expand the number of beds, enlarge a classroom, add a children’s play area, larger dining room and office space, along with the four family room addition.
Currently, the board has raised $404,156.91. Alcorn says there’s still a need for funding with the desire to keep the financing within a reasonable payment. If you would like to donate towards the shelter’s additions or sponsor a bed, you can contact do so online at ivpads.com/donate
Renovations are expected to be completed by the end of August to open for business by September. The total cost of the project is estimated at $1.1 million.
