State Trooper Struggles With Subject During Traffic Stop

CHICAGO – A State Trooper was injured and a man is facing attempted murder charges after an incident on I-290 on Wednesday. According to the Illinois State Police, around 10:30 AM a trooper was on a traffic stop near Damen Avenue, when he was allegedly almost struck by a vehicle that was traveling up the ramp. The Trooper ordered the driver to stop and pull over and the driver reportedly attempted to flee. A brief struggle ensued between the driver and the Trooper, as the Trooper was carried a short distance, before he was able to force the vehicle into park. The driver allegedly resisted arrest, but was ultimately taken into custody without further incident. The Trooper sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a local area hospital for treatment and released. The Trooper is a 12 year veteran of the Illinois State Police. The subject was identified as 31-year-old Steven Gouveia of Chicago. He was charged with Attempted First Degree Murder, Misdemeanor Possession of Cannabis, and was issued two citations for driving while license suspended and improper lane usage. Gouveia is currently being held without bond.
