SPRINGFIELD – More will be done to combat human trafficking in Illinois if Gov. J.B. Pritzker signs legislation sponsored by State Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris).
Senate Bill 1890 would require employee training for law enforcement offices and hotel employees, and would increase the statute of limitations giving survivors more time to seek justice.
“This modern day act of slavery targets our most vulnerable, which is why it’s so important that our police officers have the knowledge necessary to recognize when human trafficking is taking place,” said Sen. Rezin. “It’s also important that we offer survivors the time that they need to come forward and expose their predators.”
SB 1890 includes several components:
- States that the Director of the Illinois State Police must conduct or approve a training program in the detection and investigation of all forms of human trafficking, which all cadets and state police officers must complete.
- Requires hotels and motels to train employees in the recognition of human trafficking and protocols for reporting observed human trafficking to the appropriate authority.
- Extends the criminal statute of limitations from three years to 25 years, and the civil statute of limitations from 10 years to 25 years, giving survivors more time to seek justice.
SB 1890 passed both chambers unanimously and now head to the Governor for his consideration.
