Soybean yield on the line, farmers ask for perfect weather

OTTAWA – Soybean yield could be down unless we get perfect weather from here on out, according to LaSalle County’s Farm Bureau President David Isermann. After an unseasonably wet planting season for corn, some farmers in the county turned to prevent plant and moved on to soybeans. But given the supersaturated grounds farmers were left with, Isermann says soybeans are behind due to a lack of oxygen. According to the U.S Department of Agriculture, 78 percent of soybeans have emerged since July 1st, compared to 100 percent last year. Although farmers are still baring the brunt of soggy fields, Isermann says soybeans can adjust with favorable weather and a late frost. According to the USDA’S Farm Service Agency, the deadline to report prevent plant acres has been extending to July 15th for 10 states, including Illinois.
