Phone scam in Streator claiming to be Social Security and police department

STREATOR – A resident in Streator reported a scam phone call where the caller claimed to be the Social Security Administration and the Streator Police Department. According to authorities, the scammer claimed to be from the Social Security office and asked for money to clear up a problem. A follow up phone call was then made by someone claiming to be from the Streator Police Department and the caller ID showed the appropriate number to the department. The person stated he was an officer and would stop by the residence to clear the matter. The Better Business Bureau says in the case you receive one of these calls, do not release your Social Security Number to the caller. The SSA will never request your Social Security Number over the phone.
