Increased penalties for violating Scott’s Law in 2020

LASALLE – Motorists in Illinois will face higher penalties for violating Scott’s Law in the new year. Illinois State Police Director Brendan F. Kelly says 2019 has been an especially tragic year. 27 ISP stationary squad cars have been struck by vehicles, higher than the number of all ISP crashes of this sort that occurred in all of 2016, 2017, and 2018. According to District 17 Lieutenant Dustin Geier, a minimum first offense ticket has been bumped from $100 to $250. A second violation is $750 minimum and up to a $10,000 fine. The new law also provides that if someone is convicted of reckless homicide while violating Scott’s law sentencing is no less that 3-14 years if one person is harmed. If two or more are harmed as a result, a person can face 6-28 years in prison.
The tragic deaths of Trooper Christopher Lambert and Trooper Brooke Jones-Story, continue to be mourned.
