90 years since Streator-native discovered Pluto


STREATOR – February 18th is Pluto Day, celebrating its existence and the Streator-native who discovered it. Today marks 90 years since Clyde Tombaugh discovered the planet in 1930 at Lowell Observatory in Arizona. Tombaugh was born in Streator to a farm family on February 4th, 1906. According to NASA, In addition to discovering Pluto while at Lowell Observatory, Tombaugh also found hundreds of asteroids, variable stars, and two comets during the course of his career. Pluto is an icy dwarf planet in the Kuiper belt, beyond the orbit of Neptune.
