Scammers take advantage of COVID-19 fears

Computer Crime – File Photo Studstill Media

OTTAWA – As with any time of crisis, scammers look to take advantage of others with a number of different confidence schemes, and the COVID-19 Pandemic is no different. Some residents around the country have reported a ‘Phishing” scam, that is a text message or a link sent impersonating someone you know claiming to offer a free vaccination, test kits, or other instructions. Some of these links may attempt to harvest data from your device, or direct you to a website that will try to ask you for personal details.
