WATERMAN – A DeKalb County man is dead after a single vehicle crash that left him submerged in a creek. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office said they were called around 3 AM Sunday to Illinois Route 23 north of Waterman for a single vehicle crash. They say a truck driven by 77-year-old Richard R. Helmold of Waterman was traveling south when for unknown reasons it left the roadway, hit an embankment, drove down the ditch about 1000 feet and hit another embankment. The vehicle had heavy front end damage and the airbags were deployed when rescue personal arrived. Helmold was found unresponsive submerged in water in a ravine about 10 feet below the drivers door. Deputies attempted CPR but he was later pronounced deceased at Kiswaukee Hospital. The crash remains under investigation.
