MENDOTA – A child was taken to a Peoria hospital in fair condition after being found unresponsive in a smoke filled apartment.  The Mendota and Troy Grove Fire Departments and EMS were called around 10:30 PM Friday to the 100 block of 20th St. in Mendota for smoke in a multi-unit building.   They reportedly had to make entry into the third floor residence by breaking the door down, where they found the young child unresponsive in the main living area.

According to Mendota Fire Chief Dennis Rutishauser the child suffered smoke inhalation and was taken via ambulance to OSF St. Paul in fair condition.  The child reportedly was alert and talking upon arrival, but was transferred to a Peoria hospital.  There were no other injuries in the building and residents were able to return to their apartments. The incident remains under investigation by the Mendota Fire Department and the Mendota Police Department.
