Police warn of COVID tracing related scams

MENDOTA – The Mendota Police Department reports that they have received information about a few different phone scams involving COVID-19 tracing and testing.  They say that in one example an individual received an automated message claiming they were a close contact to a confirmed case, asking the victim to call another number.  It is important to remember that your local health department would be the one contacting you and would provide you specific details and not leave a message with health information.  In another incident, an individual received a text message asking them to participate in a study that paid up to $1,200.  It is important to remember that unsolicited text messages that take you to a website that asks for your personal details are trying to steal your information.   Authorities ask if you have doubts about a callers intentions, just hang up.
