OGLESBY – The family of longtime nurses’ aide Martha L. Burgess of Tonica has established an Illinois Valley Community College Foundation nursing scholarship in her memory.   The $1,000 scholarship will go to a first or second year nursing student who is a graduate of LaSalle-Peru Township High School and lives in LaSalle County. A 3.0 GPA is required. GED/HSE certificate holders are also eligible.
Mrs. Burgess worked 20 years at the former St. Mary’s Hospital in LaSalle. When St. Mary’s closed, she worked another 20 years at Illinois Valley Community Hospital. In fact, she helped transport the last St. Mary’s patient to IVCH.  Mrs. Burgess retired at 65 and enjoyed many years with her big family and her friends from Tonica United Methodist Church of Christ. She died Nov. 13 at age 101.
The award is being created by daughter Janice Duffell and her husband Phil. Other family members will also contribute.
“Four of my mother’s granddaughters became nurses,” said Janice. “She was very proud of that and she would be proud of this scholarship.”
The scholarship will be awarded for the first time next fall. Students can apply for it and over 130 other scholarships through Feb. 11 at www.ivcc.edu/scholarships.
