UNDATED – The Illinois Sheriff’s Association along with local law enforcement agencies have expressed their opposition to a House bill that could change policing in the state. The Illinois legislature will be looking into the 611-page bill in a lame-duck period for the next few days. The House Bill 163 proposal includes ending qualified immunity for police, eliminating cash bail, felony murder, and the removal of any federal surplus equipment militaristic in nature. In an interview, Illinois Sheriff’s Association Executive Director Jim Kaitschuk, says it’s the most devastating piece of legislation to affect law enforcement. The Illinois General Assembly has until noon, January 13th to pass the legislation. Local sheriff’s departments Lee and LaSalle County are siding with the Law Enforcement Coalition, pushing for conversations with legislators in working to support reforms that will improve the criminal justice system.
