MENDOTA – The Mendota Fire Department has purchased a new extrication tool for their ambulance to carry. The Amkus battery operated Combi-Tool will be carried on the ambulance as they are usually the first on the scene of vehicle crashes. This will allow crews to start rescue if needed until the heavy squads arrive with additional and larger equipment. The unit cost $11,500 and was purchased with department funds. According to Mendota Fire Chief Dennis Rutishauser, the Amkus tool can spread and cut. “It can be used to open doors that can’t just be opened or can be used to cut a roof off or used to cut hinges on a door to take it completely off” he noted.
