Mendota Police warn of Google Voice scam

MENDOTA – The Mendota Police are warning of another way scammers can separate you from your money or personal information. In a social media post, they describe how a scammer will call you asking you to verify a code number from Google Voice, a virtual phone and texting service. You should never share any information like that, including codes sent via text to your phone to third party individuals. They say that scammers will then use that code to set up a Google Voice account in your name in order to perpetuate scams using a phone number that will appear to be yours. Authorities advise that if you are in doubt of any unsolicited phone call, simply hang up.
