Movie & TV plot holes explained

In television & movies, not everything has to be explained, some scenes are implied.  However that does not keep viewers from speculating about what they think is a “plot hole”.  Here are some of those plot holes explained.

  1. Why didn’t Marty’s parents realize their son looks exactly like Calvin in “Back to the Future”?
    1. As parents, they watched him grow up and most likely didn’t dawn on them that their kid grew up to look like someone they met a couple of decades ago.
  2. How could Monica afford her gorgeous two-bedroom apartment in NYC on “Friends”
    1. During an episode she talked about how she lives in her deceased grandmothers apartment that was rent controlled, so if any one asks, she’s an 80 year old lady.
  3. Why didn’t Katniss let Prim take tesserae and just volunteer to replace her if she were called in “The Hunger Games?
    1. It’s explained in the movie that if one takes tesserae, they get more food rationed to their family, however their name has a higher chance of getting picked for the games.  First, she did not plan to volunteer, it was a heat of the moment decision.  Second, Prim can still be chosen and have extra names in the bowl after Katniss turns 18 and is not eligible to volunteer for her.
  4. How did Tony Stark know that Peter Parker was Spiderman in “Captain America: Civil War”?
    1. Tony had a lot of intel, it’s possible that S.H.I.E.L.D. knew about Peter, which meant that Tony would also know.
  5. If Buzz Lightyear believed he was real, why would he freeze up like the rest of the toys in the “Toy Story” franchise?
    1. He believed he was human, however he also believed that he was on an “alien planet” and did what others around him did to fit in.
  6. In the movie “Armageddon” why didn’t they teach astronauts to drill instead of teaching drillers to be astronauts?
    1. NASA would regularly have “mission specialists” with specialized training in a field the flight crew didn’t.  It was easier to train someone how to not die in space than to teach someone something extremely specialized.  Drillers like the ones in “Armageddon” typically have a lot of letters behind their names.
  7. Why couldn’t Jack and Rose fit on the door together in “Titanic”?
    1. The door may have appeared to be large enough for two bodies, however it was not.  It also could not hold the weight of both of them, you can see him try to climb up on it and the whole thing capsizing.
  8. Couldn’t Voldemort just shoot Harry Potter in the “Harry Potter” movies?
    1. It is explained in the books that wizards have a very vague idea of what a ‘gun’ actually is since it is a muggle weapon that they never use.
  9. Thor destroyed the Bifrost in “Thor” after a fight with Loki, how did he get to earth without the Bifrost in “The Avengers” movie which took place after “Thor”?
    1. Loki explained that Odin may have used dark magic to send Thor to Earth, meaning he didn’t need the Bifrost.
  10. If it is always after midnight, when could you actually feed Mogwai in the “Gremlins” movies?
    1. It was implied that “after midnight” was any time after midnight and before sunrise.
